Songs in Septuple meter (4/8, 7/8)

Postby Anne Elder » Sat Jun 20, 2015 11:08 pm

Hi there,
FLSong's discussions starting to get interesting. Songs in unusual meters. I remember there was a challenge during FAWM to write a song in an unusual meter… Here's a Wikipedia article on this meter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Septuple_meter

I need to hear songs before I can feel the concept. Now Audrey mentioned that Pink Floyd's Money is in 7/8. The wikipedia article has a long list of examples, here are just some of them. In some the meter changes for the chorus:

Pink Floyd (partly)- Money https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpbbuaIA3Ds
Seal - Dreaming in Metaphors https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FWvIlQqcko (REALLY?? Can't count this one)
Sting- I Was Brought To My Senses (Intro 4/4, rest 7/4) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiFohEgxMoM
Cat Stevens - Rubylove (7/8) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IbuATTKfcU
by Peter Gabriel -Solsbury Hill (7/4) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fF8wU4Nl9Y
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Ethiopia (7/4 except for a 4/4 chorus) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQTcZRVQAuM
Grateful Dead - Lazy Lightning ~ Supplication https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKk_i_s70c8
Rush - The Spirit Of Radio https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuL_euRslTc (The first part of the instrumental bridge alternates between 7/4 and 4/4)

These songs just made my day  I knew most of them, but did not know about the meter (OK sounded different ;)) so much to explore …

Anne
